Esta sección incluye información específica al programa de instalación de Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Anaconda.
Para poder actualizar un sistema con Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 ya instalado a Update 8, usted debe utilizar Red Hat Network para actualizar aquellos paquetes que hayan sido cambiados. No se puede utilizar Anaconda para actualizar a Update 8.
Solamente utilice Anaconda para hacer una instalación fresca de Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8.
Si está copiando los contenidos de los CD-ROMs de Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 (si se está preparando para una instalación basada en la red, por ejemplo), asegúrese de copiar solamente los CD-ROMs del sistema operativo. No copie los CD-ROMs de Extras ni ninguno de los CD-ROMs complementarios, pues esto sobreescribirá archivos que son necesarios para la operación correcta de Anaconda.
Estos CD-ROMs se deben instalar luego de que Red Hat Enterprise Linux haya sido instalado.

Desde Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8, Mozilla Suite ha sido reemplazada por Seamonkey, el conjunto de aplicación de Internet de Mozilla Foundation que incluye un navegador de web, cliente de correo-e y grupos de noticias, cliente de IRC chat y editor HTML. Se le recomienda a los usuarios de la suite Mozilla realizar la transición a Seamonkey, el cual ofrece las misma funcionalidades y comparte el mismo código base de "Mozilla Application Suite". Mozilla Suite no será mantenido por Mozilla Foundation y por lo tanto no habrán actualizaciones regulares de soluciones de errores y seguridad.
Aunque este cambio no tendrá repercusiones inmediatas en los usuarios (diferente a asegurar la disponibilidad a largo plazo de los arreglos de seguridad), introduce cambios substanciales en la API y ABI del navegador. Por lo cual, las aplicaciones que dependen de estas APIs (por ejemplo, los plugins del navegador) necesitan también ser actualizados. Las versiones actuales de los plugins para Firefox funcionan con el navegador de Web de Seamonkey.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 soporta ahora procesadores AMD quad-core.
Esta sección contiene información relacionada con el kernel de Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8.
En Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 se dispone ahora de un nuevo parámetro modificable para la memoria virtual: /proc/sys/vm/vm_defragment. Este parámetro controla el número de reintentos de asignaciones de 32K y 64K siguiendo los intentos de defragmentación.
El valor predeterminado para /proc/sys/vm/vm_defragment es "0" y tiene un comportamiento por defecto. Si se establece el valor a un número mayor de "1" se incrementará los intentos de defragmentación para asignaciones de 32K y 64K.
Se ha añadido a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 el soporte Diskdump para QLogic Fibre Channel HBA (qla2xxx) y el LSI Logic MegaRAID Serial Attached SCSI HBA (megaraid_sas).
Desde Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 no es necesario establecer la opción de inicio acpi=noirq en la línea de comandos de arranque para las plataformas IBM x336, x260, y x460. El Kernel detecta ahora automáticamente las plataformas y establece la opción.
Esta actualización contiene las reparaciones de errores para varios controladores. Las actualizaciones de controladores más significativas se listan a continuación. En algunos casos, el controlador original se mantiene bajo un nombre diferente y está disponible como una alternativa no predeterminada para las organizaciones que deseen migrar posteriormente su configuración de controladores a las últimas versiones.
La migración a los controladores más recientes se debe realizar antes de aplicar la próxima actualización de Red Hat Enterprise Linux, porque en la mayoría de los casos solamente se mantendrá una revisión de controlador más antigua para cada actualización.
Estas notas de última hora también indican cuales revisiones antiguas de controladores han sido eliminadas desde esta actualización del kernel. Estos controladores tienen el nombre del controlador base con los dígitos de la revisión añadidos; por ejemplo, megaraid_2002.o. Usted debe eliminar estos controladores de su /etc/modules.conf antes de instalar esta actualización del kernel.
Tenga en cuenta que la única forma definitiva para determinar qué controladores están siendo usados es revisando los contenidos de /etc/modules.conf. El uso del comando lsmod no sustituye la revisión de este archivo.

Añadido el Adaptec Serial Attached SCSI (adp94xx)
En IBM x460 (x3950) multi-nodes, después de instalar Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 Update 8 en un nodo y luego de fusionar éste en una configuración de dos nodos, se deben seguir los siguientes pasos para poder utilizar el adaptador de almacenaje (Adaptec 9410 SAS o ServerRAID) ubicado en el segundo nodo, :
Una vez kudzu detecte el adaptador de almacenaje desde el segundo nodo, invoque el siguiente comando como root:
/sbin/new-kernel-pkg --install --mkinitrd `uname -r`
Esto asegurará que durante el siguiente arranque el controlador del dispositivo para el segundo nodo sea cargado automáticamente.
Cargue el módulo de forma manual con uno de los siguientes comandos (como root):
Si el segundo nodo tiene Adaptec 9410:
/sbin/modprobe adp94xx
Si el segundo nodo tiene Adaptec ServerRAID 8i:
/sbin/modprobe aacraid
